Investing Spells in DQ

The DQ rules include a ritual available to all adepts that allows them to store spells inside of objects for casting later.  This is under [32.3] Investment Ritual.  Because there were essentially no limits placed upon what items could be invested with spells or how many invested items one could wield a set of rules developed over time in my campaigns.  I've linked to the handout as a downloadable PDF on the Downloads page of this blog.

The costs for "investable" items were derived from the Shaping rules and also Rune Magics runestick materials.

Hope it is useful or provides food for thought for other DQ players.

  1. Can you explain this line? "The Investment Ritual is a Special Knowledge Ritual and must be acquired by an Adept after they leave their college"

How can you do an investment if you no longer belong to a college? Once you leave a college, you lose all knowledge of its spells

  2. Poor wording on my part. I mean leave the College as in graduate and go out into the world to make your way. It is kind of a roundabout way of saying that the new Adept won't start out with it and will instead need to find someone to teach it to them.

  3. Gotcha - thanks. I know my College of the Mind adept used to enchant plain wooden wands with healing spells. I'd have ten in my belt, drove my GM nuts

    1. LOL that's a great mental image. I'm sure your party appreciated it.

  5. Same here Phergus. Never started players that they have access to wards, investment, geas, and curses.

If we get in some playing this winter I will have a player that should make Hero proficiency level in a few sessions and I will allow him to be taught those rituals/spells if he wants them.

    1. I can't say that anyone in my campaigns has ever wanted to learn Geas or Curses. Remove Curse, yes. I've generally let anyone learn Investment that wanted to but they did have to find someone to teach it to them as it is a Special Knowledge ritual. Same for Wards.
